Benign Essential Tremor - The Essential Facts

Let Me Introduce Myself

My Reason For Building This Website
Let me introduce myself, my name is Catherine and I have Essential Tremor. I know, it sounds like an introduction at an AA meeting, but often people who have ET feel the same embarrassment - disapproving glances from the general public, a 'tut-tut' attitude and even being told to ' sort yourself out.'

All of us have experienced the worry of knowing there was something very wrong with but were scared of a medical diagnosis because of the fear we may have had Parkinsons, Dystonia or some other illness. Essential Tremor is a little known, mostly hereditary condition that has devastating effects on our confidence prior to being diagnosed. Essential Tremor can affect anyone of any age but  most common onset is around age 40 - 45.

Please take time to read through this site if you have any worries regarding either your own tremor or a family or friend's tremor, as being diagnosed and finding the appropriate treatment can mean the difference between a life of social embarassment and solitude or leading a fulfilling life with no tremor symptoms.

I have had shaky hands all my life and to be honest it didn't bother me in the least, in fact, I would go so far as to say that I didn't even notice it until people pointed it out to me. However, at age 45 my head started shaking uncontrollably and, as I had never heard of Essential Tremor, I assumed the worst and thought I might have Parkinson's or some other terrible illness. I actually put up with the social embarrassment and worry for another few years until one day I made a rare visit to my physician regarding another matter. He remarked on my severe head tremor and made an appointment for me to see a neurologist. It took only around 30 minutes for the neurologist to diagnose Benign Essential Tremor. I came straight home and searched the internet for anything I could find regarding Essential Tremor and was disappointed at the lack of information available. Essential Tremor info was either a small part of a large medical site or was written for medical students and difficult to understand for the layman. I was fortunate in that all the doctor's in my practice are up to speed on Essential Tremor but I do have it on good authority that many doctor's have only a basic understanding of the condition

I decided to build this website in the hope that I can spare someone else going through years of worry thinking they may have Parkinson's Disease and being scared to seek a medical opinion.

I am not a medically trained person but at some points on this site I have had to use medical terminology. If anyone visiting this site is confused about anything or would like to ask me any questions please feel free to contact me and I will do my best to help.

Please take time to sign my guestbook if this site has been of help to you.
